Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological Physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy which focuses on the treatment of individuals who suffer from neurological disorders. A neurological disorder is a disease which affects the functioning of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Examples of neurological disorders include stroke, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

Neurological conditions can have a devastating, life changing effect upon the lives of sufferers and the sufferers’ families and friends. Individuals who suffer from a neurological disorder often have difficulty carrying out everyday tasks usually taken for granted. Therefore, the main focus of neurological physiotherapy is to provide interventions which help each individual to regain and maintain the maximum movement and functional independence possible.

Neurological physiotherapists help individuals with neurological conditions to improve their quality of life and realise their potential through a range of treatment approaches:

  • Stretching and Strengthening
  • Management of muscle tone
  • Balance re-education
  • Task practice
  • Gait re-education

And…… Functional Electrical Stimulation Coming Soon!!!

Alex our Stroke specialist is undertaking his Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) training

FES Stimulates the nerves and activates weakened muscles to provide an aid to walking which assists recovery and independent mobility.

FES can help:

  • Foot Drop – Avoid trips and falls using Functional Electrical Stimulation to lift your foot as you step
  • Poor and absent hand function – Assists the recovery of hand and arm function
  • Weak and paralysed muscles – Strengthen muscles or maintain muscle bulk in paralysed muscles

A neurological disorder can affect different people in different ways, therefore in neurological physiotherapy treatment plans and goals are specific to the affected individual’s needs and current level of ability.

Neurological physiotherapists usually work in close partnership with the affected individual and his/her family as well as other health professionals including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, medical and nursing staff.
